Stretch Panic, known as Freak Out in Europe and Oceania and Hippa Linda (ひっぱリンダ Hippa Rinda?) in Japan, is an action/platform video game designed by Treasure Co. Ltd. It was a landmark title for the developer as it was their first game to feature movement on a 3D plane; prior to Stretch Panic they had exclusively been a developer of 2D titles. The game revolves around a girl named Linda who has the power to pinch, stretch, and bend objects and enemies with a magic scarf as she battles her evil sisters.

Story

The story stars Linda and her 12 vain sisters who have generally gone mad and obsessed with beauty and made her their errand girl. The sisters would always judge her scarf and her colorful fashion sense. One day when Linda was sent to pick up cosmetics to feed their vanity, a mysterious present appears on their doorstep, and upon opening it unleashes 13 Vanity demons. 12 of the demons kidnap and possess Linda's sisters, but the 13th one gets stuck in Linda's scarf (Due to her Lack of Vanity). They then all get sucked into a different dimension where beauty is everything. The demons want to punish the sisters for being vain. With full command over her newly possessed scarf, Linda sets out to save her 12 sisters.

Gameplay

The core of the gameplay involved a stretchy scarf which can be controlled and used to snap objects at will. This lets the player bend the geometry of the levels. Players can aim the scarf and once it has grabbed something, the player must pull the object, and then release to snap it back and damage it. Linda can also grab the ground, and then pull back and launch her across distances and heights.

There are two sets of levels: EX levels, which are platforming levels and boss fights. The EX levels are notable for having only one enemy type: women with comically enormous breasts. Linda needs to defeat these enemies to earn points to open boss fights and activate the Smart Bomb move required to properly exorcise the evil spirits from her sisters' bodies.

Gallery of Shame

As each of Linda's sisters are exorcised and defeated, they are sent to the Gallery of Shame, which can be accessed by stretching the bell in the center of the Museum of Agony. The sisters' demon forms appear on the right side of the screen; their human forms are positioned to the left. While within the Gallery, you can use the controls to mess with the sisters' features and give them new textures. You can only give new textures if you exorcised and defeated the sisters and have gone through the staff credits.

Reception

Stretch Panic received very mixed reviews, mostly negative. GameGo! magazine featured the game on the cover of its first issue, and gave it a rave review, while Electronic Gaming Monthly gave it 4.9/10. Reviewers praised its creativity but derided the simple gameplay and graphics, bland non-boss stages, and unusual controls.
